Covid Testing (PCR ) Q & A

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 or the novel coronavirus. For most people, it presents mild flu-like symptoms, but for the elderly and those with underlying health problems, it can be life-threatening.

If you or a loved one is exposed to someone with COVID-19, it’s essential to get tested right away. The sooner you receive a diagnosis, the sooner you can take action to protect yourself, your family, and the community.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

COVID-19 affects everyone differently. Some people experience no symptoms. In fact, scientists currently believe 10-40% of all cases are asymptomatic.

Indications that you might have COVID-19 include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

You might also experience gastrointestinal problems, including nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting.

What is Covid testing (PCR)?

Covid testing (PCR) is a diagnostic screen used to determine if you have COVID-19. It uses a method called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect a virus’s genetic material, including proteins, nucleic acid, and DNA.

Covid testing can determine if you currently have COVID-19. That can help you determine if you’re still contagious and need to quarantine.

How does Covid testing (PCR) work?

If you have COVID-19, the virus leaves genetic material in your nose and throat. Covid testing (PCR) is a quick test that Dr. Kim performs in-office.

On the day of your appointment, Dr. Kim uses a long, thin cotton swab to collect a sample of cells from inside your nostril. He sends your swab to a medical laboratory that evaluates it for the presence of COVID-19. Typically, Dr. Kim gets the results of your test 2-3 days later. As soon as he does, he calls and lets you know what steps to take next.

Who should undergo Covid testing (PCR)?

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends you undergo Covid testing (PCR) if you have symptoms of COVID-19, if you’ve been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, or if Dr. Kim recommends it.

Once you get your test, it’s important to return home and quarantine. Isolate yourself and avoid going out until you receive the results a few days later.
